Penny Halyburton, supervisor of elections for St. Johns County, was a recent guest speaker for First Coast Technical Institute's adult education department and the high school completion class.

Halyburton stated the primary responsibility for her department is to register voters and qualify candidates.

FCTI students were taught of the election process and that voter registration books close 29 days prior to each election. In order to be eligible to vote in an election, one must register prior to the deadline.Halyburton encouraged all students 18 years or older to register to vote and distributed applications. FCTI students were encouraged to become familiar with the candidates running for office and to vote in each election.

"You may not think your vote counts, but it does," Halyburton said. "So please vote."

FCTI's adult education instructor, Theresa Burrell, said she was delighted with the visit of the supervisor of elections.

Conference held

The Association of College Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing held their annual conference in St. Augustine recently. The group chose St. Augustine because of a request from the deaf education department at Flagler College.

The conference brought together all teacher education programs for parent-teachers of the deaf across the United States and even Canada focused on teaching strategies and problem solving.

According to Flagler associate professor of education Margaret Finnegan, Ph.D., one of the highlights of the conference was the introduction of new technologies.

"The new technologies that are coming out are such things as video conferencing, the smart board that directs everyone's attention toward one area, and different kinds of software that mediate from English into sign language," Finnegan said.

Two other Flagler deaf education faculty members attended along with Finnegan: professor of education Paul Crutchfield, Ph.D., and associate professor Carl Williams, Ed.D.
